Exploring Jakarta 17th-19th November
17th November. Today we went to visit Kelapa Garding Mall. This is a favourite hang out of Christine's and I also found that this particular mall is a hang out for Indonesian Christians.

There are several Indonesian Christian bookshops, music stores and clothes stores in this mall. In fact I'd be surprised if all the shops weren't owned by Indonesian Christians. I couldn't see any stores selling anything that would be seen as belonging to any other religious group.

The visit to our relatives was very interesting in that there were lots of food and Christina and I seemed to be the guests of honour, even though this was supposed to be a casual visit. I was surprised that so many members of the family could play the guitar. It was passed from son to mother to grandmother to cousin to husband etc etc. I think I surprised them by NOT being able to play the guitar. Great conversation and learnt a few things about other countries from some of the members of the family that worked overseas.

Afterwards we headed to Cafe Jalan Jalan.

Cafe Jalan Jalan is a very expensive night spot for Indonesians. Only the 'rich' go there, or young people with disposable incomes.

I was hoping to go to the night club on the top floor but when we went there we found out that it was 'gay night'. So while this didn't really bother me, the rest of the group decided that the restaurant on the floor below was probably better. So we went there and watched the city revolve around us. The food was good and, if you're a 'bule' quite cheap.

Afterwards we went back to Ester's place.

18th
More shopping. Also went to Sarina Tourist travel centre and Tamon Mini. Tamon Mini is a theme park featuring hundreds of life size replicas of ethnic houses from around Indonesia. Sundanese, Batak, Sulawesi and more. Then onto Plaza Senaya to meet Jandri, Yuana and Mona before heading to a Manadanese restaurant.

The Manadanese restaurant was great. We had life singers who played at our table until we tipped them, great food that we finished far too quickly, and a pleasant atmosphere that meant we wanted to stay longer. A great night.

19th
Left around 10:00am to meet Ivonne at Kelapa Garding Mall. We bought Henry's ticket first than caught Bajaj to the Mall. As we couldn't meet James' Mother we spent time looking at wedding rings. The jewelery place we spent the most time in gave us packets of black currant juice to offset the hot weather. We didn't buy anything there though.

A quick wander and a couple of shops later I had a neat dictionary for Indonesian - Inngris.

After visiting some more relatives we went out to dinner with Ester and family to a Sundanese restaurant. It was an open air restaurant with great food. Then it was back to Ester's place and I spent a couple of hours tidying up their computer for them. Then some packing to get ready for Bali.

Story: A lady was pregnant. Apparently during pregnancy she suddenly developed an interest in soccer and wanted to wear her husband's clothes. When I heard this part I said '...and I bet she had a boy!' Yes, she did! The increased testosterone in growing a boy changed her. Interesting! The mother returned to her normal self after the boy was born.

Our last day in Jakarta and it was a relaxing day. Looking forward to going to Bali tomorrow.
