Exploring Medan 1st-3rd November
1st-2nd. The past couple of days were a blur but I'm now well enough to finally go clubbing! Woohoo. About time! So off to TAVERN.

After Novi, Ade and their boyfriends arrived we took a Taksi to a place that WASN'T OPEN YET! Sendy directed us to a pub which featured poor singers destroying western songs, to the requests of the audience (No karaoki, just a request band that will sing any song. Imagine!) Two Indonesian songs were also played with very similar music to something by Midnight Oil and Phil Collins. The smoke stung our eyes and the entry fee gave us a glass of raspberry fanta (which tasted like red cordial and lemonade). Tired of this and with the other place opening at 10:00 we headed over there to find a similar situation but with better singers and higher class of establishment. And we got a bir with our entry fee!

Watched Liverpool beat West Ham United 2-0 in soccer which was more interesting than the singing. Left there around midnight.

3rd
Waited for housekeeping to deliver our complimentary water, coke and sprite before heading to Ompung's place, then on to find an internet cafe. I wanted a computer with a CD Rom and one with a seat. Most had no CD Rom and needed you to sit on the floor. The second place we visited, Sendy organised the guy to move a CD Rom from the floor computer to one with a seat. Pretty good service and only 6250 Rupiah for about 2.5 hours. (I had a lot of work to catch up on!)

After that we went back to Pak's place so that we could try on some clothes and have some durian. Durian is a very sweet fruit that has a pungent smell. So if you don't mind the smell you'll be well rewarded with succulent flesh that also warms you up.

Here's a couple of durian stories. 1. It was 45 degrees celsius and a guy had had beer, coffee and a few other things that were sending his body temperature higher. Then he had a durian, a heart attack and died. 2. A woman was 7 months pregnant, had a durian and went into labour within the day. Seems to me that the durian has some useful properties. Perhaps durians can be taken on trips in winter instead of scotch? Naaah.

After watching some of our video footage it was back to the hotel again. A very short day.
