Safe sex and condoms in Japan

Short article on condoms and safe sex in Japan
One of the most popular discussion topics in pubs and clubs, about Japan, is whether a Japanese man happens to be 'smaller'.

Well, actually, contrary to popular belief, it's all relative. Apart from a few mutations, men are equally proportioned. The taller you are, the bigger it is, most of the time.

And for those of you a bit concerned about your size, contrary to what some girls magazines say, it really is what you can do with it that counts. (So, go to the gym!)

Even so, I decided to test the theory that condoms in Japan are smaller than condoms in Australia.

And, guess what! It's true!

And here's a picture!

I'm sure you can guess which is the Australian condom.

The one on the left is from Ansell LifeStyles Ultra Thin. Note the fact that it is Ultra Thin but the ring is still thicker than the Japanese condom. That means it's longer.

The one on the right is from Zero-O O2. They even have a size on the back - 0.03mm. I checked a number of shops in Tokyo and this was the standard size sold.

Now this is extremely important information for people interested in safe sex. If you want to practice in Tokyo you're going to have to bring your own condoms because it is highly likely that the Japanese condom won't fit you. It's too bloody painful to wear.

Having said that, these condoms were designed for Japanese men from the 70s. I'm sure that today's taller, bigger, meat eating Japanese are either buying the extra large size, if they can find them, or not bothering to use them. Most Japanese women I've met have to either use birth control pills or use other methods to avoid being pregnant if they wish to be with a Japanese man. And with AIDS increasing in prevalence in Japan all the time, you had better be prepared!

So, if you're in Japan, and you're planning to practice Safe Sex, please take your own condoms with you!
