Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan shopping and weird shops

Strange and interesting shops and stores in Shibuya
Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan has many interesting shops, stores, services and restaurants. There are shops that sell everything imaginable such as Don Quixote. There are whale and horse restaurants. Other services include short (an hour) stay and long stay love hotels.

But one shop that is talked about by many westerners when describing strange Japanese under culture is called ROPE.

ROPE is a speciality store that sells things that are a bit different to your run of the mill average adult shop.

At ROPE you can find school girls uniforms, school girls socks and shirts and other things that used to belong to school girls.

But, the most popular items sold are used senior school girls panties. These are wrapped in plastic with a colourful photo of the girl they belonged to attached to the front. Yours for only 4000 yen (about $US40).

You can even buy them in bulk! Packs of 10 available for a discounted price!

Having seen the other items available, like collections of photos of girlfriends for sale for 1000 yen, and that all the photographs available are perfect and seem to have been taken with the same camera, I'm convinced that the underwear probably didn't belong to the person in the picture. Especially as the gentleman behind the counter was preparing many more of these used panties to go on the shelf.

Who likes all this stuff? Well the Japanese fetish for all things school girl is called burusera.

So, while you're reeling in shock from this, think about this - where did he get these thousands of used panties of girls? Obviously school girls are party to this panty industry. He probably pays an amount for used clothing to either children or parents. This shop is only a short walk from Shibuya's most famous fashion building - 109, which contains thousands of teenage girls at any given minute. I'm sure the shop has a lot of girls selling their underwear to buy new stuff.

A few years ago the used panties and photos used to be sold in vending machines out the front of the shop. This machine has since disappeared, otherwise a photo of this machine would definitely be shown here!

So if you want to check this place out, it is only a short walk from Shibuya station but it is up a side street and upstairs. To find this shop, go to the front of the 109 building and walk up the street on the left. Keep walking until you see a small archway on the right. Go through the arch and follow the street for about one block. Turn left at Lawson's convenience store and walk for a bit longer until you see the sign for Rope. NB: In Australia the first level of a building is called the ground level and the 2nd level is called Level 1. In Japan the ground level is called, logically, 1F. ROPE, and its sign, is on 2F. So you'll need to look up to find it. Here is a picture of the sign to look out for.

One shop that I had also heard about but couldn't find was one selling bottles of girls spit with photos of the girls on the front. Whether it is true that it existed or whether it is another one of those made up stories about shops in Shibuya is unknown.

But I'm sure there are even stranger shops in Shibuya waiting to be discovered!
